HoW To Hang A Squirrel Box

Follow these guidelines to mount your squirrel box safely and help
squirrels move in faster.

Placement Guidelines

Help Squirrels Thrive.

Use these quick placement tips to keep the box cooler, safer from predators, and easier to maintain through the season.

Mounting Height

Mount the box 10–15 ft off the ground. This height helps it feel secure from ground predators while still allowing safe access for seasonal checks and cleanouts. Avoid mounting higher than 15 ft unless you can reach it safely.

Tree Selection

Mount the box on a sturdy tree that provides reliable shade, especially in warmer months. Evergreens or oaks are ideal, but deciduous trees are fine too. Just make sure the box won’t end up in direct sun once the leaves drop.

Branch Clearance

Don’t mount the box on a branch or close to one. Nearby branches can give predators easier access and create launch points toward the box. Leave clear space around the box to improve safety and reduce disturbances.

Sun & Shade

Watch how sunlight moves through your yard. Place the box in a shaded spot during the hottest part of the day. A north- or northeast-facing placement works well in many areas and helps prevent overheating or dried-out nesting material.

Tree Mount Only

Secure the box to a tree trunk using exterior screws or lag bolts. Avoid fences, posts, or walls. Tree-mounted boxes provide natural cover and climbing access, and they’re typically safer and more comfortable for squirrels.

Natual Environment

Squirrels, especially mothers with babies, do best when the box is placed where they have branches and bark nearby for climbing and learning. A natural setting reduces stress and helps young squirrels explore safely and return to the box.

Promote Occupancy

To help squirrels find a new box, place a small amount of nuts in the shell inside. You can also add a handful of dry leaves for a natural scent. Once they feel safe, they’ll begin bringing nesting material and may move in within a few days.

Clean & Maintain

Designed for easy inspections and seasonal cleanouts. Clean in late summer or early fall to remove old nesting material and help reduce parasites. Wear gloves and confirm the box is unoccupied. If it’s occupied, check again later.

Enjoyment All Year Long.
